Faith, hope, and love are called theologicalāor basicāvirtues because so many other virtues depend on them. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that "the theological virtues ā¦ are infused by God into the souls of the faithful to make them capable of acting as his children and of meriting eternal life.

The three things Paul saw are familiar to many Christians: faith, hope, and love. First, Paul was thankful because of their faith in Christ Jesus. They heard the word of the gospel and in response they put their faith in Jesus. They had a real relationship of trusting love in Him.
With regard to the other statement, the abiding of faith, hope, charity, that, too, has been misapprehended as if it indicated that faith and hope belonged to this state of things only, and that love was the greatest of the three, because it was permanent.
In sum, Michaels observes, "Hope in Hebrews is a faithful or persistent hope, and love is a faithful or enduring love. All three rely on the faithfulness of God." 35. The Apostle Paul employs the triad of faith, hope and love several times.
These "theological virtues" are derived from St. Paul: "so faith, hope and love remain, these three: but the greatest of these is love (I Cor. 13:13). Along with what St. Ambrose calls the "cardinal" virtues (prudence, temperance, fortitude and justice/benevolence) these form the bedrock of virtues ethics.

To know faith, hope, and love is to know mercy, for to know them is to know the Father and his love. The God who creates and saves out of love, the God who allows the creature a real share in his love through faith, and the God who thus gives the person an infinite horizon of hope beyond suffering and death is the God who is rightly named Mercy.
In Scripture we learn that God is love ( 1 John 4:8) and that he sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us ā a supreme act of sacrificial love. Love is what motivated God the Father to send His only Son to die for us. Thus, love is the virtue upon which all Christian faith and hope now stand.
In 1 Corinthians 13:13 he says, "Three things will last forever: faith, hope, and love-and the greatest of these is love." I have found myself skipping over this verse with a thought of "Yep,

We are called to be many things as Christianāgenerous, hospitable, disciplined, respectful. Each biblical characteristic is important and should be pursued wholeheartedly. But there is one set of characteristicsāa triad of traitsāthat is foundational and essential: namely, faith, hope, and love. If we do not have these, we do not have Christ.
